lyrics

Grandfather’s Eyes

My grandfather on my mom’s side he sang
All the old Irish songs
He sang out for the people he met on the streets
And he made his friends sing along
As he’s snapping his fingers and tapping his toes
And telling the stories that everyone knows
About three lovely children and the life that he chose.

He said “no they can’t hold me back”
As he walked toward his job in the square
As he’s whistlin’ he said “can’t you see what you lack,
If you’re not yet ready to dare”
You can see all the life in those baby blue eyes
But there’s something you notice that makes a man cry
When he never forgets what he cannot deny.

Out in the field with a gun in his hand
As a young lad sent to the war
And he sees his companions lying dead in the sand
And it tears his heart to the core
As the grenades go flying something in him snaps
The Americans shoot him for not takin’ their crap
He tries to get away, they keep draggin’ him back.

So my grandfather lived through the war
But from that day was never the same
With a bottle of whiskey he drank himself sore
To make those memories go away
And it hurt his whole family to see him that way
And my mother she thinks of him everyday
And we’ll never forget all the life that he gave.
